Fashion DNA is a common fashion programme of Ukrainian Fashion Week and the British Council Ukraine founded in 2015. The programme is run in partnership with London Fashion Week, the British Fashion Council and London College of Fashion.
The programme seeks to identify, celebrate and support emerging talented fashion designers and promote their international links and experience.
Fashion DNA programme includes the following steps:
BRITISH COUNCIL’S BEST NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR AWARD WITHIN BEST FASHION AWARDS (September 2015).
The new award is part of Ukrainian Fashion Week’s annual Best Fashion Awards and determines the best new fashion designer of the year. In February 2016, the winner – Yana Chervynska - attended the events of London Fashion Week and took part in its tailored business development programme.
The 37th UKRAINIAN FASHION WEEK: FASHION DNA WORKSHOP (October 2015).
All shortlisted designers to the British Council’s Best Newcomer of the Year award attended branding and product development workshop by Foxall Studio – the London Agency on young brands development. Works of the workshop’s participants were published in a special collection counting 2500 samples and turned into an installation during UFW. In November, the exhibition moved to one of the most famous locations in Kyiv and was available for public.
Apart from this, 2 designers-participants of the workshop selected by Foxall Studio, joined the winner of the British Council’s Best Newcomer of the Year award and attended London Fashion Week (February 2016).
LONDON FASHION WEEK: INTERNATIONAL FASHION SHOWCASE (February 2016)
All 3 selected designers-delegates of Ukraine attendend London Fashion Week and took part in a business development programme. Later, a panel of the British Council curators selected one designer to represent Ukraine at the British Council/British Fashion Council’s annual International Fashion Showcase exhibition at Somerset House.
BUSINESS SUPPORT PROGRAMME (June 2016).
On June 2-3, within the grandiose programme Fashion DNA Ukraine, created due to the partnership of Ukrainian Fashion Week and the British Council in Ukraine, there was held an educative project Business Support Programme.
During the interview of young designers and retailers and buyers held within the 38th Ukrainian Fashion Week there were selected 8 brands for further participation in Business Support Programme. Designers of brands FROLOV, Yulia Yefimtchuk+, Jean Gritsfeldt, Ostel, Artem Klimchuk, Yana Chervinska, Lara Quint, Dzhus.
Business workshops for eight Ukrainian designers were held by British consultants Katie Rose – the founder and business consultant of The Bridge Co. Agency, and Krista Grundane – Sales Manager of British brand Teatum Jones, and Sales Assistant at Tom Ford.
Paolo Rossello, Director on Art Programme Development of British Council in Ukraine: “British Council in Ukraine is proud of our collaboration with Ukrainian Fashion Week and London Fashion Week within Fashion DNA project created to support Ukrainian designers. The aim of the project is development of their international ties and possibilities to demonstrate their creativity on early stages of their career. Fashion is one of the most interesting creative industries in Ukraine, but at the same time it is one of the least known to the rest of the world. We hope with the help of this program to make a significant contribution to the internationalization and development of the sector which really deserves it”.
In 2017-18 Fashion DNA: Ukraine aims to equip emerging Ukrainian designers with skills and knowledge of sales, particularly e-commerce, and apply this knowledge in a creative context through a digital project. UK experts and creatives will be involved in each stage of the project from selection to the launch of a digital activation.
