Jean Gritsfeldt: “Let it be anyway – stylish, expensive, tasteless..., but never BORING”
Young extravagant designer Jean Gritsfeldt presented a lookbook of his FW 2013-14 collection “Divine Caviar” successfully shown before within the 32nd Ukrainian Fashion Week. In this collection the designer tried to express the idea that people are creatures originated from divine caviar. Living in modern world they have lost their uniqueness and exquisiteness and have turned into thoughtless consumers.
Jean has shared with Ukrainian Fashion Week editorial board his reflections about the origin of the humankind, about the fascinating process of creation and the resentment of boredom.
How did you get the idea to encode in your collection the message about the origination of humans, God’s creatures, from small caviar? How designer Jean Gritsfeldt starts the process of creation of a new collection?
I have always loved sea food, and I have always loved my aunt even more than sea food. My aunt was a director of fish shop in Russia (the USSR then), so black, red and aubergine caviar were always in abundance. Once all my emotions, perceptions, reflections and memories got into one puzzle and transformed into an exciting story.
Jean Gritsfeldt, as any other person with proper self-respect, has to push himself, to activate his spiritual forces, to fight against laziness and to tune himself to work before to start. Invention of collections in general is a non-stop process taking place in my head and demanding great energy and powers investments. Later this process is followed by realization stage, which is itself very complicated, especially in the country where light industry is in the process of enslavement by Chinese market.
In your first and your second collections presented within Ukrainian Fashion Week one can easily trace your designer style, nevertheless the mentioned collections differ very much. How would you summarize Jean Gritsfeldt’s style?
My collections differ because I change and develop first of all like a personality. I don’t know yet if I become better or worse, but I surely become different. That is why my creativity also becomes different. Beside that I just can’t stand boredom. My belief is: let it be anyway – stylish, expensive, tasteless, vulgar, perfect-cut, non-trivial or sophisticated, but never BORING. My style is FASHION | EVIL TWIN DESIGN | LUXURY LIFE | FAT & HONEYSEXUAL | POST ADORABLE | ∞.
Tell more about the process of creation of original prints on fabric. Why did you choose snakes, orchids and Venus flytraps for the prints?
First of all because these objects are really beautiful. The nature has created these animals and plants ideal for their living conditions and role, that’s why they inspire. Certain prints were created in Photoshop, others were hand-drawn, and the complete pattern was composed from separate parts to create 3-d illusion on a glittering fabric. Moreover, our plan was to create provocative ornaments, when placement of concrete elements brings a certain message to clothes. For instance, the all-seeing eye on shorts and trousers makes an allusion to feminine and masculine, cultivating the themes to which contemporary fashion and contemporary world appeal calling to hyper-sexuality of a successful person.
In your collection you use original accessories in metal and ultra-stylish hats. Shall we see one day a separate line of Jean Gritsfeldt accessories? Are you interested in this branch?
Maybe I can sound too self-confident, but I am interested in everything – starting from new design of supermarket bags and finishing with the way my concierge dresses. Recently I have been surprised to hear the story that I had made my way from designer of accessories to clothing designer. It’s always interesting to learn somebody’s opinion, no matter true or false. I can give a short answer: all is possible, moreover in design. The only thing in which I am not interested at all is man’s stupidity, but I sincerely wonder why its “lucky owners” don’t show any interest in it themselves.
Where can you advise to put on a hat from your new collection?
Anywhere – to a sauna or to Miami rancho, when you go to jetsetter rendezvous or just to throw away garbage. First, you can do it in a very beautiful way, secondly, in this hat, you will do it absolutely unforgettably.
What is the role of a complicated cut in the creation of a new look?
In my story complicated cut has always played the leading role. Due to this there is always an exciting dramaturgy of all the process – from the creation to the fashion show including.
Jean Gritsfeldt in 5 years?
Riding a star. In my studio I will have a big merry-go-round, and all my clients in their new silk dresses will ride it, and their long skirts will fly on the wind as the cheeks of a St. Bernard dog on a walk outside in spring.
